M42 carries 7.75% to 8.75% cobalt in its composition, while M2 has none. That cobalt content pushes M42’s hardness to around 65.5 HRC after quenching, compared to 62 to 65 HRC for M2. M42 holds its cutting edge at higher temperatures, so it suits harder alloys and continuous high-speed cutting. M2’s machinability rate stands near 65% of a 1% carbon steel; M42 runs lower at 35 to 40%, mostly due to the added cobalt hardening the matrix.
